The apple event monitor just shows script start, script finish. The result
panel just shows, display dialog ("stage1") and no dialog boxes appear.
Save the script as an application. Nothing happens.
Could it be that you didn't save as run-only and Stay Open (that's
what I always forget).
The script works fine in AS 1.6. Beeps just fine too.
