I've gotten several great responses on how to get a script to stop. Unfortunately I had tried a couple:

return
quit (continue quit)
error number -128
"Cancel" button

I actually used the 1st, 2nd, and 4th originally before I posted my question. It must be something dingy on my machine. Now it seems to be working fine. If I can repeat that problem again, I'll try posting my script.
