I've used Anarchie for this in the past, but if it can be done without an

That's not a command. It's a class:
Class FTP item : An item on an FTP server
Plural form:
FTP items
Properties:
properties record -- property that allows getting and setting of
multiple properties
name string [r/o] -- the name of the FTP item
URL URL [r/o] -- the universal resource locator for this item
kind string [r/o] -- the kind of the FTP item (directory or file)
My guess is this class is only there to support the URL class.
If you want to connect to an FTP server, use URL Access Scripting instead of
Standard Additions.
