Right, using the C string conversion was simply a means of getting
the string into a hex-string format.

And perform true ASCII comparisons?

Well, yes, I suppose that I could have used the ASCII commands to
to perform the same types of comparisons, but at 1 osaxen call per
character, it would be pretty slow.
