It ain't the Mountain Dew: this one once got me too (and I don't even drink
MD).

It is documented: pages 201-6 of the AppleScript Langage Guide covers
copy/set and how they work. Of particular interest should be the stuff on
Data Sharing. Applescript, in its good-natured friendly way, tries to help
out a lot under the hood, only sometimes it's not obvious when it's doing
it, leading to confusion when something you thought you understood behaves
"unexpectedly".

Whereas it is expected; only you don't know that unless you've read (and
understood) the ASLG beforehand. Learning curves, huh?
