i found that the "shell" command in OSX Power Additions
Lite scripting addition still works in 10.1. it's more
useful than scripting Terminal because it creates
windowless shell processes and stdout goes to the result.
(with Terminal, you can get the contents of the terminal
window, but that's pretty messy!)
