Just to harp one more time on colorblindness issues: The federal government
now requires all federal Web sites to minimize their dependence on color as
a means to convey information, under the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA). You can use color, but you must also provide an alternate means of
conveying the same information which is not dependent upon differences in
color. In the case of AppleScript formatting, use of bold, underline, italic
and other style elements would suffice, but, depending on your
interpretation of the regulations, you have to post the colored and
non-colored versions of the script separately. These requirements went into
effect June 21, 2001.
Even if you are not the federal government, it is a courtesy to readers of
your scripts to make sure that any use of color is legible to those who are
colorblind. Some shades of red and green are indistinguishable to me and
many other men; some shades of blue and yellow are indistinguishable to some
women. Total colorblindness is very rare.
Even apart from colorblindness issues, making any distinctions "minute"
defeats the primary purpose of AppleScript formatting, which is to allow a
human reader to distinguish syntax elements at a glance.
