(Maybe this thread should be titled something else by now? Anyway...)
Here's another 2c for the kitty:
Applescript, fine though it is in many respects, is a minority language on
a minority platform**. Anything which can be done to strengthen AS can only
help improve on this position.
Now, I don't imagine for a moment that a speed boost would directly benefit
every existing AS user. OTOH, citing this as grounds not to bother doing
anything overlooks the possibility that a stronger product will attract new
users and retain existing ones who might otherwise defect to rival
languages.
more users = stronger platform = more users (and so on)
Gotta be a good thing.

BTW, this has been a great thread to read. I'm still digesting much of
what's been written, but already I can see code changes aplenty a-floating
before my eyes... (ouchie - but hey, it's for the best.)

**p.s. Doesn't this sound a bit like the line "This is a LOCAL shop - for
LOCAL PEOPLE" from the League of Gentlemen? Hmm...
p.p.s. General thought: Advocacy shouldn't be about ragging on a critic who
has a point whilst pretending to the outside world that everything is just
Super And Marvellous. Instead, persuade those in charge to improve the
product where it's weakest. That way, everyone involved benefits and
everyone else will see for themselves exactly how great it is.
