That shouldn't take a 200-line script.
In my defence, Michelle, I should mention that large chunks of it are used
for things like getting the syntax of the English prompts correct, getting
it to descend through an entired directory tree, and ensuring a name which
already exists isn't assigned to a file or folder.
Thanks for your suggestion, and to the others who contributed to this thread.
I think I'll need to use an application like File Manipulator in order to
cope with the number of changes I need to make.
