I strongly recommed iView MediaPro to help you with this problem.
There are menu commands for renaming and reformatting filenames, and
it's VERY AppleScript friendly.
I'm using it right now to extract some non-standard caption info from
some legacy news photo JPEGs (about 10,000) and rewriting it to the
standard IPTC location.
Well, at least the script is 75% done... ;)
