As a historical footnote, Walt Kelly based his phrase on a
once-well-known quote from Admiral Oliver Hazard Perry during the War
of 1812: "We have met the enemy, and they are ours."

Kelly meant the 'he' to be inclusive.
I deliberately misquoted it in my first post, and shouldn't have. I had
