Well in our case at work (context Linux and BSDi...working in Python), it
was to avoid triggering 3AM pages to my cell phone about a nearly full file
system when the boss inserts a "full" CD to do an update. [When he turns
off the monitor first, he tends to forget to turn it back on.]

That situation isn't going to be a DVD for some time (the machines have
CD-ROM).

So there are contexts in which knowing the difference may make sense.
Perhaps not as many as people think they see (I didn't actually mind the
pages...they told me that the boss was fixing things again...he lives < 150
feet from the machines, I live 20 miles by road from them). [It's also
easier to figure out in Unix/Linux than in Mac OS below 10.]
