Unicode string literals under MacOS 9.1, AS 1.6?

To create Unicode strings, that contain characters that have no encoding in the standard MacOS charset, I'm currently using the following:

run script "<<data utxt00b2>>" -- "<<" and ">>" are chevrons as usual

This is VERY slow and ugly. Is there a quicker (and simpler) way?
