We're on it. There have been cases where malicious individuals are
mailbombing poor victims like Irene by subscribing to large numbers of
newsgroups from a freemail account, then setting it to autoforward.
Since she's not the original subscriber, she can't unsubscribe, password
or not.
As has been pointed out, the password-to-unsubscribe is to prevent
another malicious behavior, unsubscribing a victim without their
knowledge. On some lists the dialog gets heated enough that
participants try to sabotage each other in this way. Little risk of it
here, but it's built into the mailman software just so.
