How can we pass unix file paths to the finder?

Hi there,
In OS X I find it easier to think in terms of
"~/Applications/"
Than
"Cortex:Users:tim:Applications"

Is there a way to say to the finder

tell application "Finder"
open folder "~/Desktop Folder"
end tell

And have it know that this is a valid unix path, not a garbage mac path?
tim
