I'm at a graphics department with 5 G3 users. We use Quark, Photoshop and
FileMaker Pro to process our catalog pages. Our text database is by
FileMaker Pro, lives in a PCMac_common drive (both the Mac users and PC
users can access to), and is being shared among the 5 graphic designers
(each has her own copy of FileMaker software) and 1 copy-writer using a PC
version. The images that are used to create a page are in a Mac OS X server.
When the graphic designers create a page of our catalog in Quark, they all
use applescripts that pulls images from the MAC server and then text from
FileMaker from the PC server. Then the text is then formatted and images
sized and updated in Photoshop using more applescripts and Photoscripter.
Lately, since the artists started creating pages, their computers started
bombing here and there and they are wondering if the applescripts are
causing it.
Personally, since I wrote the scripts, I don't think they should cause the
bombings since the scripts are just doing what an artist would normally do
in a regular page process-just a lot faster and without pausing. Maybe the
gathering of text and images from servers all artists at the same time might
cause the bombings, but isn't that what the servers suppose to do...share
information to everybody at once. Or could it also be that our computers are
getting old and too slow to handle the scripts?
Please comments anyone who might have had a similar situation.
Thanks!
Erika Castro
