I spent a couple of days once trying to get at the contents of an app
bundle
using Finder commands in AppleScript with absolutely no luck (this was on
Classic mind you). Haven't bothered to try it on X -- I bet you could muck
about by using do shell script.

Adobe GoLive??? 5.0/ OmniWeb.app/
AppleScript/ OpenAG X.app/
AppleWorks 6/ OroborOSX/
Aquatint.app/ PageSucker.app/
Bryce/ PageSuckerLog.txt
Bryce 5/ Preview.app/
Calculator.app/ QuickTime Player.app/
Chess.app/ Sherlock.app/

Yes, you can get around it, the Terminal sees all of the .apps as
directories
