sorry, i use too many languages. i expected the same, and
i'm surprised to now realize you can't escape any character
you want in AppleScript. that's the only place i've seen
this behavior and i agree, it does seem like a bug ...

i had misinterpreted when you wrote:

Now, a single backslash should be allowed, and it should be ignored when not followed by special characters, that is: "\ " should be equivalent to " "

by "ignored" i thought you meant "not treated as the escape
character". the way Ralf described his problem, it didn't
occur to me it might be a compilation error. clear now.
