sorry, should have mentioned i'm using AS 1.8.1. if you have
1.8.2b3 or whatever it is, the line-end behavior has
changed.

It changed in 1.8.2b1, and then we changed it back because people complained that their scripts broke. By default, "do shell script" will strip a single trailing line ending, but there's an option to make it not do that.
