Adobe ATM 4.6.2 can instigate Type 2 and Type 3 Errors, Crashing, Stalling,
Quiting at random.
Characteristics
Erratic system operation which becomes most apparent when running
Applications which are heavily dependant upon text, or font management might
be created by a recent version of the Adobe Type Manager.
Such problems characteristically range from the appearance of the Errors,
Type 2, or Type 3, random quitting of Applications, System Hangs and
Freezes, and the sudden quiting of tasks, which can be most annoying, and
disruptive to oneUs work. So similar is this behaviour to memory task
management that it may even lead you to thinking that you have defective
memory, such is the nature of the condition. The problem is also apparent at
random, and when exercising cut, copy, paste operations.
The Afflictions
The Applications which have been discovered to be most susceptible to such
behaviour are broad. They include:
Apple's slick Appleworks 5.03 British version update of the former Claris
works 5,
Lemke's beautiful Graphic Converter (US/UK) version 4.08 and possibly later,
Bare Bone's wonderful BB Edit's Text processing Package 6.1,
The immortal mother of text processors, Nisus Writer's 6.5,
IBM's noisy Via voice ME v 1 (pre OS 9 issue),
Rick Gile's HTML Editor version 1.4,
And last & least, The MS Suite: Office, Word 5.1, 6.,
And perhaps many more
The Source
If you have reason to believe that you have a copy of ATM installed, it
might be worth investigating whether it is the recent release of the ATM
version 4.6.2 which was put in the public domain in January 2002 and
distributed widely on CD's and elsewhere.
The Known Parameters of this Affliction
These afflictions mainly pester the Apple OS 8.6, but may or may not extend
into earlier and later OS's.
Use the Apple Menu About this computer command and learn whether you qualify
within the parameters of OS 8.6.
Use Command F to find the ATM control panel, select it, and use the get info
command from the finder menu after selecting the ATM control panel in the
appropriate folder finder.
If you are running 8.6, and have ATM 4.6.2 or ATM 4.5.2 installed, then
there is a strong chance that installing an earlier version of ATM will
resolve your troubles.
The affliction is quite impartial to the presence of Apple's B-Font Manager
Update 1.0, an update which surely attends to problems of a similar
character, but from a different source. You may also wish to explore this
updater, and the technical infomation on the Apple web site.
What to do if you think you are afflicted.
Use the Adobe ATM installer, for the version of ATM which is installed on
your system, to deinstall the type manager from your OS.
In the case of 4.6.2 the Vise installer cannot successfully remove all
aspects of the ATM if you have the control panel active and running on your
system. De-installation moves the significant parts of ATM to a folder
called Deleted ATM, on your startup, system disk. But you will also need to
remove the folder entitled ATM Preferences from the Preferences folder of
the System Folder.
Once the ATM is removed, install an earlier version of ATM on your system.
Adobe's ATM 4.0.2. works well with OS 8.6, and without the characteristics
of system dysfunction which seems to blight the later Adobe update.
This problem might have happened to you because of an oversight.
Adobe's ATM version 4.5.2 tells that it is incompatible with any OS running
before OS. 9, for whatever reason Adobe might have to debar its
installation. Consequently, the Vise installer for 4.5.2 positively checks
to discover which operating system you have on your computer before it
initiates the installation procedure. Adobe inform you of this
incompatibility.
Adobe's ATM version 4.6.2 seems also to be incompatible with any OS running
before OS. 9, but for whatever reason, Adobe might have, they omitted to
debar its installation on earlier operating systems. Consequently, the Vise
installer for 4.6.2 does not check to discover which operating system you
have on your computer before it initiates the installation procedure, and
ATM 4.6.2 can be installed on platforms with system software prior to 9, but
with the aforementioned problems.
When ATM 4.6.2 is installed on a system before 9, characteristically the
package does not appear to be as transparent, illusive, and obscure, as
Adobe's earlier versions were: after a crash, for example, ATM tries to
repair defective fonts. Clearly Adobe have tried to initiate enhancements to
their software, which trigger more activity than was deemed necessary in
other earlier versions. It seems that these enhancements render the software
incompatible with other software packages, when running on system software
beneath 9.
If you find that you are experiencing troubles of this kind, you may wish to
postpone the use of Adobe ATM versionUs 4.6.2, and 4.5.2 until a time
wherein you are more able to conduct the planned upgrade of your OS to 9.
