Maybe we can veer on topic by remembering that in a sense music
is a language (the so-called universal language) and AppleScript
is a computer language. Since AppleScript has recently undergone
a huge leap in the user interface area from the mapping of the
Cocoa classes and a sizable lateral expansion by the
introduction of "do shell script", it's not inconceivable that
it will continue to grow by finding a way to interface with
traditional musical expression (including singing) as a further
advancement.
Also, I could mention that George Warner (Apple Engineer) has
the 'dodecahedron' screen saver example on his idisk and this
presents a good way to visualize the "12 viewpoints of the same
idea" phrase mentioned in the previous post.
set vol to "geowar1"
set line1 to "mkdir /Volumes/" & vol & ";"
set line2 to "sbin/mount -t webdav
http://idisk.mac.com/" &
vol & "/Public /Volumes/" & vol & ";"
do shell script line1 & line2
I want to assure those interested that the reference to chakras
as harmonic nodes is not so far fetched. In med school I had
opportunity to work with a group of neurologists and
psychiatrists using brain mapping of EEG data. Many of the
phenomena that have quantifiable correlations are clearly
resonances. I have even come to believe that is the source of
the emotional impact of music.
Interesting that you would mention this because I can testify
that the process of going through the etudes previously
mentioned summoned up the full gamut of emotions. Moreover, it
lead me to a conclusion remarkably similar to yours. Needless to
say, this has all been done centuries ago in the Greek modes
when Phythagoras was the theoretician du jour. If you're
interested in a 20th century analytical approach that
(theoretically) covers all the emotional bases, The Structure of
Atonal Music by Alan Forte is a very good starting point. It
seems to me though, a full understanding of traditional harmonic
theory would be a prerequisite to biting into his "basic"
harmonic vocabulary of the 204 pitch class sets. In particular
you might be interested in the interval vector sections. Fair
warning, Forte is as dry as they come. I think there's only one
quasi-humorous footnote in the whole book.
The acoustic harmonies and melodies are directly mapped to the
cortex at the first level of sensory input, (even before
recognition) and the waves of cortical activation that emanate,
follow physical neural pathways but are still very similar to
standard wave propagations. The mind is very much wave
transmission through a medium. That medium is synaptic
neurochemical conduction across the neuronal sea of the
cerebrum. The waves are depolaraztions (firing) of the neurons
in cascades with modulations of enhancement and inhibition that
are very susceptible to harmonics and can be considered to be
(in metaphor) a musical instrument that modifies itself to the
music. The brain grows new synapses on paths that are used and
deletes connections on paths that are not.
My experience was that I re-awakened channels that I might not
have used since childhood. Thus the paths were still there but
clogged. The vibrations would clear them up. I can't say that
I've discarded any old ones, but that they become little used
because the paths that permit the most harmonic pivot points win
the day.
Be careful of the music you play. You are what you think. Or at
least, you will become what you think.
I'll stop before I get into the social engineering aspects.
Keep it to yourself if you must, but I think it was Plato who
said something to the effect that in order to change a culture,
you had to change it's music first. This fact is not unknown to
multinational broadcasters and those operating at subversive
levels. There's always hope folks will start using such
knowledge for the benefit of mankind.
Best regards,
Philip
PS: I do hope the above clears up the "froplet" question for
Mike Helbert.
