It seems to me more likely that some other feature of your set-up is different from mine and leading to this. With so much that is flaky in 10.1.5, it's hard to know quite what. I have 10.1.5 and whatever AS installed with it - 1.8.3?

When I run this in smile

display dialog "Enter x, type return, enter x, click OK." default answer "" buttons {"Thinking", "Don't Cancel", "OK"} with icon 1
set x to text returned of result
x

The smile console window reads

{text returned:"xx", button returned:"OK"}
"xx"
