You might want to check out a bit of shareware called
FindText by Patrick Maes. I don't know if the software will
be compatible with the filing system, but I would think if
you can mount the volume to the desktop it should work. It
will search based on content, with filters for location and
file type. I don't know if it's been updated for OS X or
not, but it is quite powerful and faster than anything else
I've seen that doesn't pre-index a partition.

I think it's available online at zd.net in the mac
downloads... If not, seach for it on the web.
