Preventing narcolepsy

If I have my computer set to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity, how do I avoid it going to sleep while a script runs?

Sometimes I let a script run that takes hours, so I want to let it run overnight. But I don't want to leave the computer awake after the script is finished. I don't want to have the script put the machine to sleep as I use the same script for small short tasks during the day as well. Does this make sense?

My solution currently to avoid having the machine sleep while the script is running is to tell it not to go to sleep (in the energy saver control panel). Is there another way to keep it awake while the script runs and let it do whatever afterwards?

Thanks,
Landis
