That sort of thing is an Apple tradition. It goes back at least to 1984 in
the Mac side of the business, in the form of carefully writing the
clipboard contents to the Clipboard file at shutdown, and then ignoring the
file at startup.

Disks were smaller then but so were clipboard contents, usually. ;-)
