Time to add my two cents worth (that's my 2.02594 Euro
worth):
If security for Mail is an issue, create a non-scriptable
system-wide preference setting from the admin level that
permits selection of on-off for each registered user
account to over-ride this (and other 'port'/'script'/etc
capabilities):
Can the user run Java? No/Only without remote data
transfer (process can't communicate beyond the machine)/
Only without interface to the OS & Apps/Unlimited;
Can the user send email via Mail without user interaction?
Y/N;
Enable/disable which range of TCP/IP ports for this user?
[ranges, descriptions, On/Off];
Disable TCP/IP all ports? Y/N;
Disable SendMail? Y/N;
Disable all interpreters/compilers? Y/N/List
Permit AppleScripts to run without any user interaction?
Y/N...
School administators and consultants like myself would love
to be able to do this from a single settings panel
accessible only at the admin level. And it would let power
users, such as those that populate the AS list readily
over-ride the standard defaults to their satisfaction,
while permitting me to simultaneously protect my users from
themselves (those who need it, which fortunately, not all
do).
Best Wishes,
