Returning variables from java apps to an applescript

I am quite new to applescript and was wondering weather it is possible to return a variable from a Java Application to an applescript.
Basically, one applescript runs a couple of java applications and a few applescripts.

If a user quits a program, I need a applescript to remove a few files from some folders. Otherwise if the application runs to completion I require another applescript to run that will do something else such as restart the computer.

I have applescripts that will clear up the files and restart the computer, just need to let the applescript know how the application terminated.

Can anyone help???

Bruce.,.
