Sorry, I couldn't resist. Many, many years ago I had "The Elements of Style" crammed into my skull. Shrunk didn't like "people" as I recall. (about all I recall too)

See http://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/people.htm for the historical perspective on the migration of the plural form of "person". In general you can use "people" as a plural noun with mass and "persons" as a plural noun with count.

"Shrunk"? Was his co-author "Wtite" by any chance?
