Sorry, I couldn't resist. Many, many years ago I had "The Elements of
Style" crammed into my skull. Shrunk didn't like "people" as I recall.

In general you can use "people" as a plural noun with mass and
"persons" as a plural noun with count.
"Shrunk"? Was his co-author "Wtite" by any chance?
