Is the QT plug-in also set as the helper (in file helpers) for the
same file type?

Rob,

Yep - that's the helper that gets set, even if I have thrown it out first. That is, if I delete every file helper that deals with TIFF images (there are usually 4, comprising each combination of image/x-tiff and image/tiff MIME types and .tif and .tiff extensions) and create a new one (or new ones for the above combinations) designating a particular application (e.g. Preview), I can get the application to open the file. This only works until I quit and relaunch Explorer, after which new file helper prefs using the QT plugin have somehow been recreated. It's as though Explorer recognizes the presence of the QT plugin and that this supercedes (and overwrites) the one(s) I created.

Does this point to an explanation or solution?
