Because that's not how the syntax is defined ... if you want to write a bug for it, go right ahead.

Laziness spurred the original question. I'm not submitting a bug report on this because I consider it to be an issue of language completeness (cross the t's and dot the i's) rather than an error.

As usual, I'm using the term "bug" loosely. "Enhancement request" would be more accurate, but in the spirit of laziness, "bug" is a lot easier to type. They all go into the same database anyway. Please don't be shy about filing things in Radar -- it's the best way to get us to do something about them.
