This sounded like a good lead. After all, it's AppleScript that has changed,
not AppleWorks, so the problem was most likely to stem from the part of the
script where AS strips out the tabs before handing the text over to AW.

But when I ran your Knapped version of my original script, I got the same
thing as before: Suite headings (18pt) were not recognized and the script
failed to stop when it reached the first paragraph.

Sadly, this makes the waters muddier, not clearer. I am at a loss to explain
the discrepancies between your results and mine when running this script in
OS X 10.2.
