FMP and Applescript

Hi, I'm working on a bunch of applescripts with Filemaker 5.5 running remotely (so I'm sending Apple Events over the network to a seperate machine running FMP). I'm having a bear of a time...FMP crashes all the time, sometimes will return "not found" results when the same query yielded a found result moments before.

Can anyone point me to any "best practices" or techniques to use when using Applescript to Query FMP, to minimize these occurances, and also to optimize for speed (these are large databases).
