Yes, I had seen "Alarm Clock Pro", and that's actually what
stimulated my original question. How does this feature work?
Perhaps the functionality can be accessed with a shell script.
I note that the feature in Alarm Clock Pro is not fully integrated
into the rest of the program. Perhaps it is reliable for only short
periods of sleep (measured in minutes). Why?
Are there any other programs out there that will wake the computer
from sleep? I am not aware of any.

The author claims that Alarm Clock Pro 6.1 (check it out at
www.versiontracker.com) can now, at last, wake an OS X system from sleep at
a predetermined time. ACP itself isn't applescript savvy, but it will launch
a script applet for you. I haven't tested the wake from sleep function yet,
though.
It seems to work. Choosing 'wake from sleep' in Alarm Clock Pro 6.1's
'Alarms' menu puts up a dialog that asks for an administrator password and
number of minutes 'til wake-up time. It's just a matter of setting the time
and then putting the computer to sleep using the Apple Menu or keyboard.
If Youpi Key can be coaxed into entering password and sleep duration into
the appropriate text entry boxes and simulating a click on the 'set' button,
then it should be possible to script the whole process. I'll give it a
try...
