Au contraire, that was a tremendous help. I had already checked on font
issues and trashed the preferences and temp files and so forth, but it never
occured to me to look into the XTensions folder. I haven't yet nailed down
the exact culprit, but if I disable all XTensions the script works great.
Boy, what a relief! I had been banging my head against this for days and
thought I was going to have to abandon the project altogether. When I find
the exact XTension(s) that are to blame for all this trouble, I will post
that info.
