Forgive a potentially dumb question, but how do I use this? I have
installed it in the proper directory, and I am able to explore its
dictionary. The OSAX dictionary suggests that I should say "record
make from" to create a new record. When I do this, however, I get a
compilation error on the word 'from.' What gives?

Is there some way to tell AppleScript that the command you are about
to issue comes from an osaxen? Or perhaps its simply that I am using
OS X and this is not OS X compatible?
