To add to Shane's comments, the reason that the do script implementation in
PhotoShop is so much weaker and ineffective (and more difficult) than an
appleScript implementation is that there is no way to get information about
an image or file or even the results of the last action or command back into
your script. It's all one way.
Theoretically, Actions have all the power of the entire application. But in
practice this can only be used in very limited and controlled situations
because Adobe chose not to take the extra step and make the scriping
interface interactive. It's a shame really, and if they repeat the same
mistake in OS X then it will lead to continued frustration for
AppleScripters (especially the ones who expect software to be free) as well
as additional competitive opportunities for applications like Graphic
Converter.
