Mr. Tea, as a relative newcomer to OS X, you're seeing only the most recent
behaviour in 10.1.2. In earlier versions of OS X, the extensions were not
always invisible, and in some cases, but not others, were essential. I
believe that they may still be essential in some cases, but tend to be
invisible now. Probably those sample scripts were written and packaged at a
different historical moment vis-`-vis extensions. And I suspect that we're
not finished yet with changes, and that - in the end - it will probably work
quite well.
