If the files are originating on the mac, the type code of the file (4
character code) will reflect the document type, with TIFF files having type
code TIFF, and picts having type code PICT. If you're trying to sort out EPS,
it gets much more complicated (EPSF, EPPS, etc).

more information on how to pull the type code...
