We are actually past square 1, since curl is built into OS X. You can telnet through curl using "do shell script".

BTW, the complaints about URL Access Scripting are valid, but again curl can upload and download just fine.

Check out http://curl.haxx.se or do a "man curl" in your Terminal to learn about this cool and powerful tool.
