Thanks for your input, Ron.
I tried the script at home (I was originally trying from my company LAN),
and it worked with some corrections. One person kindly told me off list that
a -916 error meant "port was closed". So it seems the RPC query, the return,
or both does not make it through our company gateway.
I wonder if there is something I can do on the client side (my Mac, in this
case) to make this work (ie, change some network configuration or make some
sort of changes to the script itself), or whether a change in the gateway
setting is necessary.

This looks to really add to what AppleScript can do.
It sure does. I thought acronyms like RPC or SOAP belonged to a world I
don't have access to. It's really cool that they're now accessible through
AS.
On the other hand, I imagine there'll be others like me who's connected
through a firewall. I'm lost as to what steps I can take to make this work.
I think it'll be nice if the Apple document offered some pointers about
these potential problems.
I know a little about AS, but I'm clueless about networks; our company IT
people know about network, but they probably have never heard of AS. They're
really sensitive about viruses and those sort of stuff, so they might not be
super enthusiastic to help me find out what's causing this -916 error, much
less make changes to gateway settings (if that's what it takes)
