In 10.1.3/1.8.1 I cannot type a slash in the name field at all, I
get an error beep when I try. And pasting in a name containing one
results in it's being converted to a dash.
I'm amazed at the rapidity of improvements and bug fixes being
applied to OS X.

Colons are not allowed in file names.
Make yourself a small script, and save it as a stay open app. Call it
"Colon
here/ please". Double-click on it in X, and then move your cursor
over its
icon in the Dock.
;-)
What does that do?
It shows a file name of "Colon here: please".
