The Appscript would not run unless Smile had been run.(stupid, huh?)
After way too much time on something that should seemingly just work, the
above suggestion WORKS! I had to download/install Smile and add an alias
to it to Startup Items and then add a block to my script to quit it
(hack-o-rama).
I'm still baffled that so few people seem to think this is
ridiculous/insane/unacceptable/bug/etc., and I'd love to hear from someone
who can say what is actually going on.
Perhaps now knowing that:
1) launching Smile (via Startup Items), then
2) launching my applet (via Startup Items), then
3) quitting Smile (via the applet)
...makes everything work fine will help explain what's going on (where the
script's failing at startup but succeeding in Script Editor didn't)?
Anyone know what Smile does as the pinwheel spins on launch? Apparently
it does more than:
try
<<event ascrgdut>>
on error
end try
Thanks to those of you who have been so dedicated to helping me with
this, and especially for a workable solution!
Hoping for some closure (and removing the Smile hack),
