os-x 10.1.3 script editor record function doesn't work

I couldn't find this in the archives: does the latest script
editor fail to record with the finder and other standard apple
applications? Their dictionaries are there and they can be
scripted by hand, but I can't make them record.

Possibly I have a configuration problem? I'm a bit of a newbie,
being a unix/linux convert to darwin.

BBEdit, on the other hand, seems to record just fine.
