Yes, more clues :)

'list folder <folder ref>'- whether <folder ref> is a string or an alias- returns the list of folder item names as strings- including invisible items unless you use 'without invisibles'. It's a Standard Additions command that doesn't need to be in a Finder tell block.

'last item of myFolder' is a Finder command that needs to be in a Finder tell block. It returns the list of visible items as 'item x of folder y of disk z of application "Finder"'. Different list, different items class.

Whether you want to use one or the other is a matter of your choice, IMHO usually it's better to avoid the Finder.
