There is one possibility that no one has seemed to mention, and that is
using dialog boxes that auto-dismiss after a very short time-out. It would
indicate progress only occassionally, but it might be better than no
indication at all. Something along the lines of:
display dialog "50% accomplished" buttons {"OK"} default button 1 giving up
after 7
-- display the box, dismissing it automatically after 7 seconds,
-- just enough time to read it, if it is front most...
