FWIW the MAC addr is in no way unique. You swap a new NIC you get a
new MAC. Also you can change it! (Decnet used to do that) What a shock
that was the first time I got bit in a large DEC client that I was doing
workflow a number of years ago. I noticed two computers with the same
MAC addr and they were not in Apples range! I was really getting some
wierd packet traces until I figured it out. Decnet normal mode was to
change the MAC to a set that it wanted.

and to really prove my point I ran this on my PB and I got two MAC
addresses separated by a CR. One for ethernet and one for my airport
card.

If someone knows of a OSAX to get a HD serial or ?? that would be a
unique ID. Could use the serial number but in older machines that gets
erased once you zap the pram.
