That helps. You definitely need to know its IP address, or the name of its IP address. This can be accomplished in a variety of roundabout ways for DHCP clients, but I am not well versed in that lore.

I thought Apple was going to address this somehow by running some form of NBP on IP, but I haven't heard anything about that in ages.

Definitely a consideration, as firewalls are designed to prevent this sort of thing. IS would prefer that you follow their rules when setting up a server accessible from outside the firewall.
