Don't know about Ilu 9, but the three first lines in a Illu 8 *.ai doc looks
like this.
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 8.0
%%AI8_CreatorVersion: 8.0.1
and a *.eps file looks like this
%!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(R) 8.0
%%AI8_CreatorVersion: 8.0.1
Can't you look for the third row "%%AI8_CreatorVersion:" and check the
value.
You don't have to parse a complete file, only a specific number of bytes.
