Thanks for the responses, guys. I finally tracked the problem to the
Satimage osax's "find text" command, of all things:(. Not entirely sure
what was causing it to go wonky, but think it was somehow choking on the
[moderately complex] pattern I was using. I've tried replacing "find text"
with vanilla code (100 lines versus 1, and slower) and the problem goes
away. Can't say I've seen Satimage cause crashes before, but maybe that's
an applet thing - who knows? Anyway, I've put in a bug report to Emmanuel,
so I guess it's his problem now... :)
