Wow, wth? :-) Thanks for illuminating a dark corner in my computer.

I think my actual problem lies elsewhere. I attempted the same task with a different application (TextEdit), and I was successful. Therefore, I think my problem was with inserting strings into Word. String literals work fine, but my styled text from Mail.app was breaking my script. I believe I have the means to fix this. Thanks again.
